JOB INTERVIEW MISTAKES
(June, 2024) Reddit asked, “What is the biggest mistake you’ve made in a job interview?” Some of the responses:
– “To illustrate my excellent attention to detail I mentioned that I had noticed a spelling error in their job ad. Never heard back.”
– “The manager had a picture of a naked mole rat on his desktop and I said ‘Gross’ he then told me it was his pet.”
– “Interview at a local movie rental store. Completely blanked when I was asked what movies I’ve watched recently. Ended up throwing out ‘Cheech and Chong’ after a way too long delay, then nervously laughed like a stoner.”
– “I was young and nervous and forgot my own address.”
– “Interviewing at Kmart as a summer job. HR Director: ‘So everything looks good. If you ever need a job reference, come see me at the end of your employment here and we’ll see what we can do!’ Me: ‘Oh that won’t be necessary, I have references from real jobs already.'”
– “I showed up 15 minutes early one time and the hiring manager was really upset by this.”
– “It was at a popular craft store. They asked what crafts I like to do – I have zero craft talent. I lied and said I liked making jewelry. They hired me and whenever a customer had a jewelry question they always sent them to me.”
– “I didn’t do my research and didn’t realize one of the main people I’d be interviewing with was a girl I had hooked up with a few years prior.”
– “The interview was early in the morning so I drank a cup of black coffee to wake me up. I don’t usually drink coffee and am sensitive to caffeine. During the interview I was speaking too quickly and too loudly, and sweating a little. I probably looked like I was on coke. I did not get the job.”
– “I went to an interview after going to a goth club the night before. I completely forgot to clean the black nail polish off, so I tried scratching it off on the train ride there. The lady who interviewed me went off about my appearance just from that. She really character assassinated me as hard as a complete stranger can.”
– “I did their interview and when they asked what I knew about them, I provided all the information I read. But I thought this was a construction company. The guy tells me no, that they are a router company. Surprisingly, I did not get the job. Always double check before the interview.”
