ALGORITHM TELLS YOU WHETHER YOU SHOULD STAY TOGETHER
(February, 2016) When Rashied Amini’s girlfriend wanted to break up two years ago, he wondered if he could mathematically prove that they should stay together. Amini was working as a systems engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the time. He knew how to build predictive models about space missions using algorithms. So, he developed a romance predictor. On Friday, he launched Nanaya.co, an online site that can predict the user’s chances of finding an ideal match, where it’s most likely to happen, when you should settle down and how happy you’re likely to be in the relationship. The site is aimed at people in their 20s and 30s who are wondering whether to stay in a relationship or continue to play the field. On the site, users begin by taking a romantic personality test. Then, there are questions about lifestyle preferences, values, future goals and one’s experiences being single. It also takes into account your deal-breakers in a future partner. Nanaya’s predictions are based on the user’s responses in relation to all the other data collected from the rest of the users in its database. Currently, about 22,000 people have taken the personality test, but Amini wants to reach at least 100,000 users to make the results more reliable.
* “Honey I’m leaving you and the kids because, well, math.”
* If this was a commercial, the fine print would say “Results may vary.”
* If you think your relationship needs help from this website, then right out of the box you start with a score of -200.
* Wow, for starters this guy belongs in the Geek Hall of Fame.
* This guy has gone where no geek has ever gone before.
* How come the guys on The Big Bang Theory never thought of this?
* How good is his algorithm? I mean, can it predict that magical moment when the love of your life starts to get on your nerves?
* Unfortunately, his plan has no chance. Why? Rocket science is easy. Relationships are hard.
* In fact, by mathematically wanting to prove he should stay together with his girlfriend, he sort of proved why she had to dump his sorry ass.
* She knew she had a problem when he brought a slide rule into bed with them.
