BREAKING UP WITH SOMEONE OVER POP CULTURE
(June, 2017) Vice.com asked readers if they’d ever broken up with somebody over not liking the same pop culture. Here are some of the responses:
– In college, I broke up with a girl because she thought Borat was annoying. – Max, Pittsburgh
– My ex asked me who Ginuwine was. I said, “The reason we’re breaking up.” – Haley, New York City
– I dumped someone because she refused to watch ‘Back to the Future’ because it seemed “so long and old.” – Preston, Toronto
– I knew one of my exes was wrong for me when he described me as “quirky like Juno.” – Diana, Los Angeles
– I mentioned I didn’t really like the Beatles, and he said I was just saying that to be cool. It turned into me getting furious because he kept saying “agree to disagree” as if there were no way I could possibly dislike the Beatles. The way he insisted I didn’t know what I was talking about annoyed me so much I eventually broke up with him. – Alex, Denver
– I dated this girl for a few months, and things were going fine until she referred to Radiohead as “that weird music” that was “too sad.” – Nathan, Philadelphia
– She had a subscription to US Weekly. – Fletcher, Washington, DC
* This is nothing. Imagine disagreeing about Kanye West or the Kardashians. That could turn into a fistfight.
* Maybe the girl who’s quirky like Juno can meet a guy who’s quirky like Michael Cera.
* I thought all women find Borat annoying, like a generation ago they all found The Three Stooges annoying.
* It’s good to know that, deep down, Americans are all pretty shallow.
* Except the girl who didn’t want to watch ‘Back to the Future’. She’s a lost cause.
