PEOPLE WITH ACNE LIVE LONGER
(Sept, 2016) Research from King’s College London suggests that people who have had acne could be likely to live longer. Dermatologists have noticed that the skin of acne sufferers appears to age more slowly than in those who have not experienced any acne in their lifetime. Scientists studied white blood cells taken from individuals with acne and found they had longer protective caps on the ends of their chromosomes. Called telomeres, the caps are like the plastic tips that stop shoe laces becoming frayed. They help prevent the chromosomes from deteriorating and fusing with their neighbors during cell division. People with longer telomeres – like acne sufferers – age more slowly than people with short ones. The study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
* I’m sure this study will mean a lot to every 8th grader out there.
* So … if you want to live longer, eat lots of greasy food and chocolate when you turn 12?
* I was almost convinced until they compared DNA to shoelaces.
* How long will you live if you wear only loafers?
* The Journal of Investigative Dermatology? Darn, I must have let my subscription run out.
