SHOCK: NEW STUDY FINDS OUR DIET IS BAD
(March, 2016) A new study finds that nearly 60 percent of what Americans eat is junk – ultra-processed foods loaded with sugar, salt, fat and all the other stuff we are not supposed to snack on. A team of Brazilian and U.S. researchers from the University of São Paulo and Tufts University in Boston say the data pretty clearly explain why two-thirds of Americans are obese or overweight, and why rates of diabetes and heart disease are soaring. Fresh fruits and vegetables should make up most of what we eat, nutritionists say. But the study found they contribute just under 650 calories a day in the average 2,000 calorie-a-day diet. The most common ultra-processed foods in terms of energy contribution were breads, soft drinks, fruit drinks and milk-based drinks, cakes, cookies and pies, salty snacks, frozen and shelf-stable plates, pizza and breakfast cereals.
* Yeah. And … ???
* Great. All this talk about food makes me want a donut.
* Hey – they forgot to add the part where we also don’t get enough exercise.
* Nice work, fellas. Ben and Jerry’s should name an ice cream flavor after you.
* 60% of what we eat is junk? Frankly, that number sounds a little low.
* That would mean we ate 40% healthy and I know that doesn’t happen.
