HOW TO LIVE 12 YEARS LONGER

(April, 2018) Researchers at Harvard University used lifestyle questionnaires and medical records from 123,000 volunteers to understand how much longer people lived if they followed a healthy diet, controlled their weight, exercised, drank in moderation and did not smoke. They noticed a dramatic effect from the healthy habits. Compared with people who adopted none of them, men and women who adhered to all five saw their life expectancy extend an extra 12 years for men and 14 for women. Men and women who had such healthy lives were 82% less likely to die of heart disease and 65% less likely to die of cancer compared with those with the least healthy lifestyles. The five healthy habits:
1. Not smoking
2. Having a body mass index between 18.5 and 25
3. Having at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day
4. Having no more than one 150 ml glass of wine a day for women, or two for men
5. Having a diet rich in items such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains and low in red meat, saturated fats and sugar
* Also, stay the heck off of Facebook. It won’t extend your life, but it’s still a good idea.
* This is good, because I’ve never heard these suggestions before, except for maybe three million times.
* They forgot taking selfies at the edge of cliffs or next to wild animals. It seems obvious, but people keep doing it.
* Twelve extra years, but with this lifestyle, it feels like 30.
