ZOO BENCH MADE FROM RECYCLED ELEPHANT DUNG
Artis Zoo in Amsterdam takes recycling seriously. The zoo created a park bench made of 65 percent elephant dung and 35 percent recycled plastic. The zoo’s Asian elephants produce around 650 pounds (300 kilograms) of waste per day. The zoo was looking for creative ways to deal with this manure. So it recruited five design students from the AMS Institute and asked them to experiment. They came up with a bench made from manure. The zoo is currently testing the durability of the prototype. If it proves reliable, they plan to eventually replace all its park benches with this sustainable model.
* Or, they could turn the manure into compost for everyone in the Netherlands.
* They got the idea for crappy furniture from IKEA.
* Don’t sit on it after it rains.
* Can you see peanut shells in it?
* You’ve heard of Ashley Furniture – this is Assly Furniture.
* Personally, I would have pooh-poohed this idea.
