WHALE SINKS BOAT
A giant whale – (* as opposed to the smaller, petite whales) – crashed into a sailboat in the Pacific Ocean, sinking it and causing the passengers to escape in a life raft. Rick Rodriguez, 31, of Tavernier, Florida, and three friends set off from the Galápagos Islands on his 44-foot sailboat Raindancer for a three-week journey to French Polynesia. But on March 13, less than two weeks into the trip, right in the middle of lunch, they heard a loud noise. The back half of the boat lifted violently upward, then slapped down and began to sink. Rodriguez made a mayday and set off the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. The group quickly gathered essential supplies, including enough water for a week and food for three weeks – then scrambled into a life raft and dinghy before the boat sank in about 15 minutes. Fortunately, rescue came after about 10 hours. A 45-foot catamaran, called – no kidding – The Rolling Stones, was only about 35 miles away and responded to the mayday call and rescued the four friends. Rodriguez said that “there was never really much fear that we were in danger. Everything was in control as much as it could be for a boat sinking.” One of the four witnessed the whale, and believes it was a Bryde’s whale that was about as long as the vessel.
* Bryde’s whales are known douchebags of the deep.
* I mean, seriously – in the middle of lunch?
* For a moment, they thought they had run into Brendan Fraser.
* “Thanks for saving us! Uh, how much would you want to take us the last little bit to Polynesia?”
* And the moral is, don’t go sailing during whale mating season.
