WE EAT A LOT OF PLASTIC
Do you eat plastic? “Only that yellow stuff they pretend is cheese on ballpark nachos” you say, but the truth seems to be that we eat a lot of plastic. Environmentalists warn that humans may be consuming the equivalent of one credit card per week. Researchers from the Ocean Conservancy say it’s mainly creeping in via drinking water and seafood. And, a new study by the World Wildlife Federation International says there are plastic particles in the environment small enough to be absorbed by wildlife or by people and then potentially have harmful consequences.
The WWF calculated the average plastic consumption by humans over periods of time:
– One month = 21 grams, or one Lego brick
– Six months = 125 grams, enough to fill a cereal bowl
– One year = 250 grams, the size of a full dinner plate
– 10 years = 5 1/2 pounds (2.5 kg), about the weight of a life-saver ring buoy
– One lifetime = an estimated 40 pounds or more, the approximate weight of two plastic recycling trash cans
* “We eat a lot of plastic.” My first thought: “Oh, you’ve been to Arby’s.”
* There’s a lot of plastic in store-bought foods. All those hearts and moons and clovers in Lucky Charms, all baking and ice cream sprinkles, those candy dots stuck to sheets of paper, and, of course, Necco Wafers.
* If this is true, who’s to say humans aren’t the solution to all the plastic pollution in the environment? We’re eating it!
* Maybe it’s business trying to turn everybody into a walking Debit Card. No need for a wallet. We’ll just stick our finger into the credit card machine and enter a PIN number.
