VOLKSWAGEN BEETLES ARE NEVER COMING BACK, SAYS VW
The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most adored cars of all time. The Beetle was in its prime in the 1960’s, but as sales dwindled, manufacturing switched to factories in Mexico and Brazil in 1978. In 2003, they brought back an updated Beetle, which sold a total of 43,134 in the US. But by 2018, that number sank down to 14,411, and the car was discontinued. Volkswagen’s chief executive Thomas Schäfer says in an interview with Autocar to not hold out for a third new Beetle. He says, “There are certain vehicles that have had their day. It wouldn’t make sense to bring it back. It had its day, then there was a new model based on a reinterpretation. To do that again? I don’t think so.”
* Why does he sound like a Bond villain?
* I guess this make sense. But what about those cool VW vans, huh? HUH??
* I thought they just brought back the Beetles with AI John Lennon?
* If McDonald’s can bring back the McRib, Volkswagen can bring back the Beetle.
* They’re tiny. Stick a couple of drone propellers on ’em, and you could have a hit.
