VACATION ISLAND AIMS TO BE PHONE-FREE
An island in Finland wants to become the world’s first phone-free tourist zone. The tiny island of Ulko-Tammio in the Eastern Gulf of Finland has declared itself a phone-free area this summer. Travelers will be asked to keep smart devices in their pockets and to disconnect from social media. While the island still has a functioning mobile network, the new rules – which will be voluntary – will give visitors a chance to focus on nature. Officials say there’s plenty to do once you put your phone away. There are hiking trails that wind around the rocky shoreline, and there’s bird-watching, and… did I say there are hiking trails?
* Good luck calling for reservations.
* Can you snitch on visitors you spot using their phones? Is there a reward?
* You get to keep your phones, and not using them is voluntary. It’s almost as if you could do this WHEREVER you go on vacation.
* You can put away your phone, but every half mile along the hiking trails there’s a guy offering you an extended warranty on your car or a credit line up to $10,000 for your small business.
* You’re going to want to keep that phone off. You don’t want to cross the Scandinavians. Remember what happened in that movie “Midsommer.”
* Isn’t Ulko Tammio one of the bad guys on “The Mandalorian”?
