UNIVERSITY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR VIDEO GAMING

The University of Utah will become the first big-time sports school to offer scholarships for competitive video gaming. Backed by the Salt Lake City school’s video game development program, Utah’s first varsity e-sports team will play Riot Games’ popular League of Legends and compete in Riot’s collegiate league (* but of course they would). Utah is the first school in the “Power Five” – the five richest athletic conferences in college sports – to offer scholarships for video gaming.
* They must be so proud.
* The terrorists have won, folks.
* Maybe we need this. I mean, who are we going to get to operate the drones?
* I was hoping for fantasy football scholarships, but this is nice too.
* Gee, why would young people want to escape from the world we’ve left them and lose themselves in a video game?
* And why would we want to waste money giving a scholarship to a future doctor or engineer when we can promote this?
* Next up: robots who compete with each other in playing video games.
* Competitive video gaming? Why, that doesn’t sound ridiculous at all.
* “League of Legends”? Yeah, in your minds, kids.
