THE MOST MISPRONOUNCED STATES

Burt Vaux, a linguistic professor at the University of Cambridge, conducted a survey on how people around the U.S. pronounce the state that they live in. Here are Burt Vaux, or Vauh, or Voh, or Voo, or Vow’s Most Mispronounced U.S. States By People Who Live In Them:
7. Illinois: The ‘s’ is silent. “Il-ih-NOY,” not “Ill-ih-NOISE.”
6. Colorado: Colo-RAH-doe,” locals will tell you that it’s better to say “Colo-RAD-oh.” (* Note from a ColoRAHdan: no we won’t.)
5. Arkansas: The last “s” is silent. And is should be pronounced “AR-kan-saw” instead of “Ar-KAN-sas.”
4. Missouri: Two pronunciations are acceptable, according to Missourians: “Mih-ZUR-ee,” and “Mih-ZUR-uh.”
3. Florida: Residents would argue that Florida should be pronounced with a southern accent, “FLAW-rih-duh” rather than “FLOOR-ih-duh.”
CLIP: Our “Flor-i-DUH” jingle.

2. Oregon: Originally, it was “Ore-uh-GONE.” However over time, that changed to “ORE-uh-gun” and today’s most common pronunciation: “ORE-uh-gin.”
1. Nevada: It’s actually pronounced “Ne-VAD-uh,” not “Ne-VAH-duh.”
* No love for Loo-siana?
* Word is there’s one moron in Provo who pronounces Utah “OO-tuh”.
* I still want to know how that extra ‘c’ got into Connecticut.
* Everybody start pronouncing Montana as Montaña, and really screw them up.
