TEEN ON FAST FOOD DIET GOES BLIND

A case study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine involves a 14-year-old British boy who first visited the doctor complaining of excessive fatigue. Blood tests confirmed he was deficient in iron and vitamin B12. He was treated with B12 shots. A year later, he’d complained about hearing loss and poor vision. By 17, his eyesight had declined to a score of 20/200, considered “legally blind”. Further tests showed his optic nerve was damaged, and he was still low on B12, copper and vitamin D. Doctors probed further into his diet, and the boy confessed that he was a picky eater and the texture of certain food turned him off. He revealed his daily meals usually consisted of french fries, white bread, processed ham, sausage and Pringles potato chips. They diagnosed him with “nutritional optic neuropathy” – an example of how nutritional deficiencies can cause cellular nerve damage.
* “Thank god,” he said, “I thought it was caused by my excessive wanking.”
* Can I eat Pringles until I need glasses?
* In his defense, he is in a country that serves nothing but British food.
* If you were a doctor who let a kid wither away for three years, would you really want to tell everybody about it?
* “Thank you for submitting this case study, and also, we’re revoking your license.”
