SPANISH TOURISM MINISTER: COME SEE THE ERUPTING VOLCANO
If you haven’t seen the video, there was a massive volcanic eruption over the weekend on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, off the coast of Spain. The eruption sent lava hundreds of feet into the sky and spewing down the volcano’s face, destroying nearby houses and forests and forcing about 5,000 people, including some 500 tourists, to flee. Yet Spain’s Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto went on a radio program on Monday to suggest that the eruption is a potential tourist attraction. She said, “The island is open. If your hotel is affected, we will find you another one. Make the most of this opportunity to enjoy what nature has brought us.”
* “We guarantee you a hot breakfast.”
* “Bring an extra pair of shoes.”
* “We’re planning the biggest S’mores party ever!”
* “Are you watching, Hawaii? THIS is how it’s done.”
* So Spain hasn’t entirely eliminated human sacrifice to appease the volcano god. Interesting.
