RESTAURANT NO LONGER WEIGHING CUSTOMERS BEFORE THEY EAT

A restaurant in Changsha, China, has apologized for its controversial policy of asking diners to weigh themselves before eating. The policy was an overzealous response to a new national campaign against food waste. The government is urging customers to order one dish fewer than the number of diners at a table – an attempt to overturn the ingrained cultural habit of ordering extra food for group meals. At this particular restaurant, customers were asked to stand on a scale and scan their data into an app that recommended food choices based on their weight and the dishes’ caloric value. The policy was announced Friday, swift backlash came on Saturday when the policy was spread through social media, and on Sunday the restaurant dropped the requirements.
* Don’t give Country Buffet any ideas.
* Food waste? If you’re plump, isn’t that a pretty good sign that you’re cleaning your plate … and then some?
* “Was it really “How much are you going to eat?” or was it “I’m sorry, we don’t have any appropriate furniture.”
* They got the idea from North Korea, where if you step on a scale and it moves, you don’t get food that day.
* Speaking of Country Buffet, how much does this pandemic suck for buffet restaurants like Country Buffet or Sweet Tomatoes? They’re goners.
