REMEMBER YOUR VACATION BETTER BY DRAWING IT

If you want your vacation memories to last longer, stop taking photos or videos and draw a picture instead. That’s the conclusion of a team of experts from Oxford University who say memories will stay fresher in the mind depending on the number of senses used when creating those memories. If you’re taking a photo, you’ll use sight. If you take a video, you’ll use sight and hearing. But drawing activates sight, touch, sound, as well as “proprioception” (or position sense), enabling the brain to solidify the memory, thereby ensuring its longer-term existence. Scientific evidence suggests the more senses we stimulate, the more robust the multi-sensory memory, because it connects with our emotional senses. Sketching also has an advantage because it engages both our visual brain and our hands, and things we have a hand in creating become more meaningful to us.
* To remember even better, add taste by drawing your vacation picture while chewing lemon slices.
* How does this work if you go to, say, a nude beach?
* “You guys go on ahead. I have to draw the Grand Canyon.”
* Whatever you do, just remember to draw your spouse weighing less than they really do.
