PERSONAL AIRBAGS TO PREVENT HIP INJURY

One of the most common and devastating injuries among the elderly is a broken hip. Numbers show 1 in 4 seniors who break their hips die within a year. A personal airbag technology is being developed in the U.S.and other countries. It’s literally an airbag in a smart belt you wear around your waist. The belt is able to detect a sudden, rapid change in altitude within milliseconds, so that between the time you start keeling over and the time you hit the floor, an air bag pops out of the belt, surrounding your hips and butt. Currently, the belts are being tested on residents at Eskaton Village, a retirement community in Carmichael, California. There’s no official date for when it will hit the market, but the hope is to have it available sometime this year.
* “Help, I’ve fallen and I bounced right back up!”
* I was thinking you could wear a swimming pool inner tube around your waist, but whatever.
* Or fill your house with Nerf floors.
* The only down side is, if they go off accidentally they give the elderly a heart attack.
* This is a better idea than dressing the elderly in those inflatable sumo costumes for bar events.
