NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD: 8 BILLION
How many people do you think there are in the world? According to the United Nations Population Fund, we are just about to hit 8 billion. Is it too many? Population Fund chief Natalia Kanem thinks the number is not a cause for fear, as it reflects an increase in life expectancy and fewer maternal and child deaths. Another population expert – Joel Cohen of Rockefeller University’s Laboratory of Populations – says it’s not the number of people, but our choices in consuming far more biological resources, such as forests, land and water than the planet can regenerate each year. He believes people should be given better choices. And if 8 billion seems like too many people, just hold on for awhile longer – The United Nations estimates that our planet will be home to 9.7 billion people by 2050.
