MY DUMBEST TRAVEL MISTAKE
As we wrap up the summer and people come home from vacations, Reddit asked, ‘What is the dumbest travel mistake you’ve made?” Some of the responses:
– “I booked a train from Venice. When the train never arrived, I discovered I’d booked a bus. We missed it.”
– “I missed my train because I was too busy filming it arriving. The doors closed in front of me and I had to wait three hours to get to the next one.”
– “I waited in line for the Anne Frank museum tour in Amsterdam before realizing their ticket was ‘for the following year.”
– “I booked a hotel on the wrong side of the Grand Canyon. We had driven to the other side.”
– “Went on a weeklong hiking trip to the Grand Canyon in college and I forgot to pack a single pair of underwear.”
– “I booked a trip to Istanbul in December, assumed it would be warm because it was on the Mediterranean and in the Middle East. Didn’t check the weather predictions, didn’t pack any warm clothes, and it was snowing when I arrived.”
– “I ate a meal with raw vegetables at a gas station on the bus from Kathmandu to Delhi. I was ill the remainder of the trip.”
– “Packed my passport in my suitcase, then I checked the suitcase.”
– “I once booked a month-long Airbnb for the wrong month.”
– “Booked a hotel for Portland, Oregon, but I was going to Portland, Maine.”
– “Took my 5 year old son to a toy store before going to the airport. He set off security with a pair of fake handcuffs, a giant nickel, a huge metal eyeball and a joy buzzer. Scared the hell out of him when he got searched. They confiscated the handcuffs and the joy buzzer.”
– “The night before our trip to Barcelona, my husband noticed his passport had expired. Hotels were nonrefundable at that point so I waved goodbye and did the trip solo.”
