INTERNATIONAL SUDOKU DAY
TEDDY BEAR DAY
The Punchbowl website says this:
“Teddy Bear Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our most loyal childhood companions. The teddy bear dates back to the early 1900s and its history is closely linked to an American president. In November 1902, President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt attended a bear hunt in Mississippi. The other members of the hunting party captured a young bear, tied it to a tree, and offered the shot to the president. When news spread that Roosevelt refused to kill the bear, a political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman depicted the president with the bear in a cartoon titled, ‘Drawing the Line in Mississippi.’ In the first printing the cartoon bear was a full-grown animal, but it was later redrawn as a cuddly cub. The story and cartoon became famous, toy makers were inspired to create ‘Teddy’s Bear,’ and by 1906 the teddy bear craze was in full swing.”
TESTER’S DAY
The Jetbrains blog says this:
“On September 9, 1945, scientists at Harvard University were testing the Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator computer, and found a moth which had gotten stuck between the contacts of an electromechanical relay. The work they performed required some description, and they coined the word ‘debugging’ – literally, the disposal of an insect – and today ‘debugging’ means the process of identifying and eliminating bugs which cause a computer to malfunction. The removed insect was pasted onto the computer log with the entry: ‘First actual case of bug being found,’ and was then transferred to the computer museum.”

BAND LINEUP FOR JIMMY CARTER’S 100TH BIRTHDAY
Former President Jimmy Carter’s birthday is on October 1. Even though he has incredibly been in failing health for years, he has vowed to hang on until after the November election, because he wants to see how it all comes out. Meanwhile, though, the Carter Center announced “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” a musical celebration of Jimmy’s upcoming 100th birthday. The event, on September 17th, will feature artists from pop, rock, gospel, country, jazz, hip-hop and classical music, along with special guests to honor the former president’s legacy of service. The star-studded lineup includes The B-52s, Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris, The War And Treaty, Duane Betts (the son of legendary Allman Brothers Band co-founder Dickey Betts) and singer-songwriter Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash, as well as BeBe Winans, India Arie and Lalah Hathaway.
* Jimmy Carter likes the B-52s? I figured him for more of a Talking Heads kinda guy.
* Everybody has been asked to keep their song under two minutes so everybody can perform before the former president— well, you know.
* President Carter promised to stop by the show if he can finish that Habitat for Humanity roof in time.
* Wouldn’t it be great if the history books read, “President Carter passed away during a performance of GROUPLOVE.”
THE BUZZ
MY WEIRD NEIGHBOR
Reddit asked, “What strange thing is your neighbor doing?” Some of the replies:
– “The neighbor across the street feeds the stray cats outside. After he empties the food on their plate, he runs his fingers inside the can and licks the remaining cat food off his fingers.”
– “My neighbor has a nightly ritual of serenading his garden gnomes with a ukulele.”
– “They howl with the coyotes that are howling outside every night.”
– “He hunts with a flashlight for golf balls in my yard that he hits into my yard because he refuses to change his launch angle when he practices his swing. He gets bonus points for being both drunk and in his underwear.”
– ” I noticed the neighbor across the street walk to a tree in the middle of his yard, reach into a hollow, pull out a toothbrush, and proceed to brush his teeth while watering his lawn. I drove away, so I didn’t see if he returned the toothbrush to the tree hollow or not, and I have not since seen him repeat the behavior, but man, I can’t stop thinking about it.”
– “My neighbor mows his lawn at the crack of dawn every Sunday. Not so weird, right? He does it dressed as Darth Vader, complete with the breathing sounds.”
– “My neighbor keeps the inside ground floor of their house lit up like an airport 24/7. Bright lights beam out their windows no matter what time of night. I’m curious about why but don’t know how to phrase the question.”
– “My neighbor has a pet rooster that he walks on a leash. He takes it for a stroll around the block every evening.”
– “Most days, between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., he fires up his circular saw, makes one single cut, and then turns it off. I don’t know which house it is in, but I am so curious about what he is doing.”
* PHONE TOPIC: What weird thing does your neighbor do?

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SUPERFAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR BANK ROBBERIES
A federal judge last week sentenced the Kansas City Chiefs superfan known as “ChiefsAholic” to more than 17 years in prison for a string of 11 bank robberies across seven states. Xavier Babudar, 30, who became known as Kansas City’s “ChiefsAholic” superfan and would attend games dressed as a wolf in Chiefs gear (* A wolf in Chiefs’ clothing?), admitted to stealing nearly $850,000 from banks to finance his social media stardom – the money bankrolled the expensive tickets and travel across the country to attend Kansas City Chiefs games while he cultivated a large fan base online. Mr. Babudar will spend 17.5 years in prison for the bank robberies he admitted to earlier this year. Babudar developed a following on his @ChiefsAholic account on X after attending games dressed as a wolf in Chiefs gear.
* So a big bad wolf.
* Seventeen years. So he’s going long.
* They should tack on another ten years for that awful name: ChiefsAholic.
* $850,000 to attend pro football games? I knew they were expensive but that’s a little nuts.
* Guess he’s going to learn a new definition of ‘tailgating’ in prison.
KITTEN ON HIGHWAY CAUSES THREE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT
Last Wednesday afternoon, a California couple driving east on the 91 Freeway in Riverside spotted a kitten stranded on the westbound side. The couple, both in their 20s, made a quick decision to rescue it. They took the next off-ramp and circled back, slowing to about 30 mph in the HOV lane with the car’s flashers on. The woman, who was driving, slammed on the brakes and stopped, pulling as far out of the carpool lane as she could. The man jumped out, took off his shirt and scooped up the kitten. But then a car coming up behind them didn’t brake in time and swerved into the center divider, heading right toward the man holding the cat. He jumped over the wall, losing the cat. The driver then swerved the other way, clipped the bumper of another car and careened across all lanes of the freeway, hitting a tractor-trailer. No one was seriously hurt, but one person was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The semi drove off, apparently unaware it had been hit. The cat escaped alive.
* And on it’s little notepad, it crossed out “26” and wrote “29.”
* Not only do they try to kill us in our houses, now they’re getting us on our highways.
* Folks, don’t stop in the middle of a highway to catch a cat. Park on the side and shake a little bag of cat treats.
* To top it off, while the man was holding the kitten, it peed on his shirt.

UNISEX UNIFORMS IRRITATE BRITISH POLICE, IN THE WRONG PLACES
British police are complaining about their new unisex uniforms. The male officers claim the trousers are crushing their testicles, and female officers say there is an uncomfortable lack of space “between waist and the crotch.” The complaints are coming out as a result of a police uniform and equipment survey. In July, more than 200,000 police officers and staff were invited to give their views on the police uniforms, worn by both male and female officers. The men say the cut of the pants crushes their jibblies, and the women are complaining about, uh, chafing.
* No one likes an uncomfortable bobby.
* Something’s irritating the fuzz.
* The uniform and equipment survey says the uniform is causing a problem for the equipment.
* The uniforms are crushing it, and not in a good way.
* They could have used an extra Scotland yard of fabric.
