THE BUZZ

I KNOW A GUY

Reddit asked, “What’s your ‘I know a guy’ moment”? Some of the responses:
– “There’s a guy at work who always has mayonnaise. If my sandwich is ever feelin’ a bit dry at lunch, I go to Isaac and he’ll lather my bread up.”
– “I got a cat guy. A friend’s sister really wanted a cat, she had one within two hours of me contacting my cat guy.”
– “If you want radioactive material, I know a girl.”
– “I’m the guy to move 100′ trees by both helicopter and sled. A wealthy person was wondering about getting some trees into their backyard, so I was ‘the guy they reached out to.”
– “I’m that guy who gets contacted by the local animal shelter when a large spider shows up in someone’s home.”
– “After a night of drinking, the boys started arguing about the best way to cook a steak. I know a guy whose family owns a meat processing business. I called him up, an hour later around midnight he delivered some ribeyes, New York strips and a tenderloin.”
– “For a bachelor party where I was the best man, I surprised the groom by taking everybody out to a junkyard where he could run over cars with a tank.”
PHONE TOPIC: Did you ever have a strange ‘I know a guy’ moment? Do you know a guy for something unique? Are you that guy?

DISNEY CRUISE SHIP RESCUES SINKING BOATERS

A Disney Cruise Line ship rescued four people from a sinking catamaran in Bermuda on Sunday. The 50-foot catamaran was about 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda when it began taking on water. After the passengers called for help, the Coast Guard issued a broadcast, and the Disney Treasure, which was about 80 miles away, launched one of their small boats and rescued all four passengers. The four individuals were recovered safely. The Disney ship was on its way to Port Canaveral, Florida.
* The rescue went well, but the passengers had to wait 90 minutes in line to board the ship.
* And after two hours of “Under the Sea” on the Disney boat, they were begging to back to the sinking catamaran.
* In case you’re wondering, the rescue craft does have a gift shop.

CAR THIEF LEADS CHASE IN REVERSE

In Dearborn, Michigan, police got involved in an unusual high-speed chase last month. They spotted a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe SUV at a gas station. As officers approached the car, the driver backed away in reverse gear and took off. The driver kept going backwards down the four-lane road as police followed and oncoming cars pulled out of the way. Amazingly, he didn’t hit anything. After about a mile, the driver gave up and pulled over.
* The cops yelled: “Up hands your with out come!”
* Was he hoping to somehow turn back time?
* Roll back his odometer?
* Maybe he was from Superman’s Bizarro World?
* This is not how to move forward in life.
* If you’re gonna steal cars, you gotta practice your bootlegger turns. Saw that on Top Gear.

DEER BREAKS INTO 103-YEAR-OLD WOMAN’S APARTMENT

Last Monday in Blackman, Michigan, a 103-year-old assisted living resident sustained injuries when a deer broke through her bedroom window while she was in bed. The woman was able to call police, who arrived to find the deer thrashing around the apartment. One officer used his baton to smash a sliding glass door and allow the buck to escape. The officers found the resident conscious and alert. She was rushed to the emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries.
* If you’re not humming “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” right now, there’s something wrong with you.
* It’s a War on Christmas, and Christmas is fighting back.
* Sure, they could put bars on the assisted living building’s doors and windows, but that would look really depressing.
* You think a deer coming into your bedroom would never happen in a hundred years. But a 103 years…

IHOP AND APPLEBEES MERGING RESTAURANTS

The corporate parent of the IHOP and Applebee’s restaurant chains are combining those two restaurants under one roof. Just like the KFC-Taco Bell combination restaurants, the company has tested the IHOP-Applebee’s combo in other countries, and now they are ready to open the first American one in Seguin, Texas, early in 2025. Diners can expect the joint restaurant to feature a shared kitchen and a combined menu. The dining area will offer both IHOP and Applebee’s sections side-by-side. The concept is to “allow IHOP to shine in the morning and Applebee’s to thrive in afternoons and evenings.”
* So basically, the same Applebee’s but the tables will be stickier because of the syrup.
* Translation: The corporate parent wants to run two restaurants with a single set of kitchen employees.
* Can I get a Rooty-Tooty Fresh and Seafoody?
* Imagine if other restaurant chains started combining locations:
– Hooters and Whataburger could be WhataHoot.
– Shake Shack, Shakey’s Pizza, Steak & Shake would be Shakey Shake Shake
– Chipotle and Popeyes would be Chipopli’s
– Red Robin and Panda Express would be Red Panda
– Dunkin Donuts and Hard Rock Cafe will just be Hard Donuts
– Long John Silver’s and Jimmy John’s can be a set of Longjohns.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS INVENT SMART GARBAGE CANS

A pair of Vancouver high school students have invented smart garbage cans that tell you what kind of trash you should be throwing in them. Amy Bach and Sunny Huynh noticed that their fellow students throw all of their plates and leftover food into one garbage can, which ends up in a landfill. To help students improve improve their waste sorting habits, they came up with a device that uses sensors and odor detectors and cameras to help determine in which can the waste should go. The girls used 5,000 images to teach their AI-based invention to recognize different types of trash. If the wrong trash goes in the wrong bin – a paper carton goes into the food waste, or an orange peel goes into the paper container – the trash can recognizes that and beeps, or sends an alert to the trasher’s phone. The girls plan to continue to work on their invention in hopes of scaling it up and eventually introducing it to all 89 elementary and 18 secondary schools in the Vancouver school district.
* This is the greatest invention ever, said everyone who can’t tell an apple core from a paper plate.
* Not bad, but it would be cheaper to hire someone for the kids to hand their garbage to, and that person throws it out.
* What you really need to make this work is an enforcer robot that makes you reach in and pull out that creamed corn you just tossed into the plastic recyclables. You’ll never do it a second time.
* AI is transforming the world in remarkable and impressive ways. Then there’s these garbage cans.
* Now do laundry! Socks and undies, silk and wool, lights and darks.
