NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY
NATIONAL DOG DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“National Dog Day has two goals: to honor dogs, and to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse. It’s an opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in our lives. This day is intended to honor dogs for all that they do for us. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways. They are watchdogs for our safety. They lead the blind. Dogs aid in search and rescue, and they seek out bombs and drugs. The second goal of National Dog Day is to rescue dogs in need. On occasion, dogs need us to save them from homelessness and abuse. The goal of the National Dog Day foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. Lend a hand to help a dog in need today, or any day.”
WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY
Wikipedia says this:
“Women’s Equality Day commemorates the granting of the vote to women throughout the country. Women in the United States were granted the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified as law. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women’s Equality Day since 1972, the year after legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed in 1971 designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day.”

ADULTS WITHOUT COLLEGE DEGREE LESS LIKELY TO HAVE CLOSE FRIENDS
A new survey finds that nearly a quarter of U.S. adults with a high school diploma or lower education level said they had no close friends. But just 10% of those with a college degree said the same, leading to the conclusion that adults without a college degree tend to have no close friends. The findings come from a survey of around 6,600 adults conducted by the Survey Center on American Life, a nonprofit that researches how people’s lives are shaped by culture, politics and technology. Daniel Cox, the center’s director, notes that being alone is less boring now, thanks to video games and streaming services, so people may be less likely to join social groups or spend time with friends or family. Another is that for those without a college degree, there are fewer opportunities to engage in social activities, perhaps because they lack the time or money to frequent venues like bars and restaurants.
* Or, perhaps people with college degrees seek out more friends to sponge off of because they are in such deep debt from that college degree.
* Could we get some opinions from people with sociology degrees, or are they all busy hangin’ out with their friends?
* Ask yourself, is a friend really worth the $150,000 cost of four years of school?
* This must be why that show was called “Friends” and not “Blue Collar Friends.”

NEWS COPTER FINDS BOY CUTTING SCHOOL
In Brooklyn, New York, a 9-year-old boy who headed off to school at 7 a.m last Thursday never made it. Police were called to the scene, and a search began. Chopper 2 from New York’s CBS affiliate took to the skies to search. WCBS-TV chopper reporter Dan Rice very soon spotted the boy sitting on the rooftop of the family’s building, looking at his iPad. Rice called the police, who went up to the roof and retrieved the boy and his computer and his book bag and took the child down to his mother.
* It’s getting harder and harder to cut school these days, isn’t it.
* Kid’s got a good story for “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” now.
* WCBS-TV News, Number One in snitching!
* What do you suppose the difference in price is between a police search including an emergency helicopter flight, and an Apple Air Tag in the kid’s backpack?
* The takeaway for kids in Brooklyn skipping school: Roof – no, Underground parking garage – yes.
PUNK BAND SINGER TERRORIZES NATIONAL PARK
A hardcore punk rock singer went very hardcore last Wednesday at Yosemite National park in California. Anthony Mehlhaff, the 40-year-old lead singer for Los Angeles-based band Cancer Christ (* You’ll remember them from their hit “Bluebirds, Lollipops and Ice Cream”) began his rampage at a restaurant in the Buck Meadows area of Mariposa County when he confronted a pregnant waitress, telling her that the “spirits led me to you. Your baby belongs to me, what time is your break because I will be waiting for you.” Mehlhaff allegedly stole several drinks and assaulted another restaurant employee before fleeing to Yosemite National Park, 15 miles away. He crashed his car near the Fish Camp area, took his shirt off and handed it to a witness telling him, “You’ll want to keep this, I’m going to be famous.” Mehlhaff then stole a bicycle which he rode to the nearby Tenaya Lodge, walked through the kitchen’s back door, put his hat and other items in a refrigerator and then grabbed a knife and threatened the workers. Mehlhaff then stripped down to his underwear and told customers to leave or they’d be in danger. Mehlhaff then attempted to “kidnap” the manager before stealing the manager’s car. Driving back on Highway 41, Mehlhaff encountered a Tesla and began extreme road rage behavior, tailgating the Tesla while making aggressive hand gestures and then ramming into the car. Mehlhaff was then chased by sheriff’s deputies, crashed the stolen car in Oakhurst, and was subsequently detained by law enforcement. Mehlhaff was charged with vandalism, vehicle theft, reckless driving, kidnapping, first-degree burglary and robbery.
* Yosemite Slam.
* For a punk rocker, hitting 40 can be really upsetting.
* He’s singing a new song now – Folsom Prison Blues.
* Sounds like one too many stage dive mishaps.
BABY BORN WITH HELP FROM DUNKIN’ DONUTS
Danya Mahota was driving his pregnant wife, who was deeply into labor, to the hospital on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They were stuck in heavy traffic. His wife, Rebecca, told him to pull over. He stopped on the shoulder of a busy highway, ran around to the passenger door, she told him, “Sweetheart, put your feet on my shoulders.” He did, and pulled out their second daughter. He called 911 for help, arranging to meet EMTs at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts. While waiting for the EMTs, he ran inside and borrowed an X-Acto knife which, he said, “I used to cut my daughter’s umbilical cord in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, like every Massachusetts father should.” (Dunkin’ Donuts was founded in Massachusetts.) Said mom Rebecca Mahota, “You can’t get more Cape Cod than this baby.”
* The baby was a fish? I’m confused.
* I bet dad came out of Dunkin’ Donuts with the X-Acto knife and a glazed look in his eye.
* Cutting the umbilical cord was the icing on the cake donut.
* Why do they have an X-Acto knife at the Dunkin’ Donuts? Are they scrap-booking while on break?
* I hope they let him have a few napkins to clean up the back of the car.
THE TOUR DE DONUT
The Annual Tour de Donut took place over the weekend in Troy, Ohio. The Tour de Donut is a unique bicycle event, where your ability to eat donuts is just as important as your ability to ride your bicycle fast. The event is a mass start timed ride where riders visit donut stops and eat donuts. For each donut the rider eats during the ride – and keeps down – they have 5 minutes deducted from their ride time. There are prizes in several classes including a Tour de Donut championship jersey for the best adjusted “donut time.” The winner this year was Travis Jones with a winning time of 55:32. They didn’t say how many donuts he ate.
* Nor how many he may have left on the ground.
* Are you allowed to stick them on your handlebars and to carry them as you ride?
* Eating donuts while you ride your bike. Carbs for long-term endurance, sugar for quick bursts of energy. I GUESS you could make a case for it.
* Anyway, that’s the hole story of the Tour de Donut.
INTERNATIONAL NEWS
ROBBER GETS SIDETRACKED BY A BOOK DURING BURGLARY
A would-be burglar in Rome was caught when he was distracted by a book in the middle of a theft. The 38-year-old suspect reportedly gained access to an apartment through the balcony, and became distracted after picking up a book on Greek mythology that was sitting on a bedside table. The 71-year-old homeowner saw the thief and confronted him while he was engrossed in the book, titled “The Gods at Six O’Clock,” which explains the classic Iliad story from the perspective of the gods. After being caught reading, the intruder attempted to make a quick getaway out the same balcony, but was arrested shortly afterwards. He was reportedly in possession of a bag containing expensive clothing allegedly stolen from another house earlier that evening. News of the failed burglary attracted the attention of the book’s author, Giovanni Nucci, who told local media he wanted to send the man a copy so he could finish it.
* Good idea. He’ll probably gonna have some time on his hands.
* So the burglar’s thinking, “I’m gonna look for jewelry, cash, clothing – hey, look at that! I wonder what the Iliad would seem like from the perspective of the gods?”
* He got caught reading about the Iliad, and so ended his Odyssey.
* The guy likes literature, so they read him his rights.
* They took him down to the station where he was – yeah, you guessed it – booked.
* Arrested for reading. Where was that again? Texas?
INCREDIBLY LARGE DIAMOND DISCOVERED IN BOTSWANA
A massive 2,492-carat diamond – just over one pound – has been discovered in Botswana by a Canadian mining company. The diamond, the second largest in the world, was discovered in the Karowe Diamond Mine in northeastern Botswana using x-ray detection technology. In terms of carats, the stone is second only to the 3,016-carat Cullinan Diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905. The stone, which is the size of the palm of your hand, has been estimated to be worth upwards of 40 million dollars. It was presented to Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi last Thursday.
* So the plan to sneak it out of the country didn’t work?
* Anyway, this is probably the last you’ll ever hear of it, but we thought you’d might like to know.
* The future Mrs. Mokgweetsi Masisi will be getting a lovely engagement ring.
* She’s gonna develop a nice bicep on that left arm lifting her hand up and down.

“A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN” BALLPARK DESTROYED BY FIRE
The historic baseball field featured in the 1992 comedy “A League of Their Own” was destroyed in an overnight fire. The Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario, Calif., built in the 1930s, could not be saved after it was engulfed in flames just before midnight last Thursday. The blaze broke out around 11:30 p.m. When firefighters responded to the scene, they discovered enormous flames coming from the stadium and dugout. Sadly, little could be done to save the landmark. The facility had been renovated several times over the years, but officials said there was likely a lot of old wood in the structure, which is dry and burns quickly and could have contributed to the magnitude of the flames. No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.
