MEXICO GIVING AWAY EL CHAPO’S HOUSE IN LOTTERY
A Mexican house that belonged to former drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is going to be given away in a national lottery, as part of a government program to regain money from seized properties. This one – “Casa en Culiacán” – is about 2,800 square feet, two bedrooms, and valued at $183,000. There was a hole under the bathtub where El Chapo escaped as troops moved in, but that hole has been sealed over and re-tiled. They’ve also repaired the damage done by the marines as they stormed the place in 2014. Five days after his escape from this house, the marines caught up to Guzmán at another home, 125 miles to the south in Mazatlan. About a year later, he famously escaped again from his jail cell, through a tunnel. But he was recaptured, extradited to the United States, tried, convicted and sentenced to life in prison in July 2019.
* That’s great and everything, but is it open concept? I don’t want anything that isn’t open concept.
* You know who fixed the place up? That’s right: Los Property Hermanos.
* $183,000. You could almost buy a detached garage for that in the U.S.
* The new owners will have a good story to bore their guests with.
