MAN WHO HOARDED TREASURES FOR RETIREMENT DIED BEFORE HE COULD CASH IN
A British man known as the country’s biggest hoarder amassed an epic collection including Beatles and Elvis Presley memorabilia, vintage comics, rare books and more, planning to fund his retirement with them. But Ramann Shukla died of a heart attack earlier this year at the age of 64, leaving a treasure trove of about 60,000 items spread across his three-bedroom home, rented apartment and two garages. Mr. Shukla, a computer programmer who lived alone in Nottingham, spent almost two decades collecting. It remains a mystery as to where he found the money to buy it all. When space got tight, he moved to a bed and breakfast to make room for his collection. Among the items:
– Thousands of items of Beatles memorabilia, including a rare “Hard Day’s Night” record signed by the Fab Four.
– A dozen Rickenbacker guitars expected to sell for $13,000 each.
– More than 6,000 vintage comics, including a Justice League of America comic valued at $1,500.
– Signed photos and letters from JFK, Winston Churchill, Gandhi and Elvis Presley.
– Plus 4,000 rare books and 3,000 chemistry sets.
– Radio equipment, ghetto blasters, cameras and lenses and model kits.
His collection is expected to fetch up to about $5 million at an upcoming auction.
* The Justice League of America comic is valued at $1,500. The 3,000 chemistry sets … about four bucks.
* Is he the country’s biggest hoarder, or the country’s best shoplifter?
* “Honey, I just found Mr. Shukla dead in his bedroom. Should I call the police?” “We can do that later. First – call a moving van.”
* He collected everything but a defibrillator. Tragic.
* Now he’s just collecting dust.
