MAN TO DRINK WHISKEY CONTAINING HIS FROSTBITTEN TOE
Nick Griffiths of Manchester, England, lost three toes to frostbite while competing in the intense Yukon Arctic Race two winters ago. As he was being treated at a local hospital, Griffiths remembered a strange advertisement he had seen just before the race – the Downtown Hotel in the town of Dawson, Canada, was looking for severed toes they could put in their infamous “Sourtoe Cocktail” – a shot of whiskey with a toe in it. The hotel’s bar has been serving up the drink since 1973. You’re supposed to touch the toe to your lips as you drink, but once in awhile an overzealous drinker swallows the whole toe. Griffiths mailed in his three severed toes to the bar, where they have since been mummified. The bar wanted Nick to be first to do a shot with his toe in it, to “make it extra special,” so he’s flying to Dawson so he can drink the shot tonight (Monday 9/23). The bar describes Nick’s big toe as “a beauty”.
* The toenail, not so much.
* This’ll be the second time he kisses that baby goodbye.
* The toe is said to give the whiskey “hints of overripe cheese with a dense finish of spoiled pork.”
* What’s the old saying? “Lips that touch toes that have touched liquor shall never touch mine.”
* Don’t ask what the bar uses for martini olives.
