MAN LEAVES AIRPORT AFTER 110 DAYS
A man has been rescued after being stranded in an airport for more than 100 days due to coronavirus travel restrictions. Just like in the Tom Hanks movie “Terminal,” Roman Trofimov of Estonia was traveling from Thailand on March 20th when he landed at Manila airport in the Philippines. Once he arrived, however, he learned he would be unable to leave because the Philippines were not issuing visas for arrivals due to coronavirus restrictions. In addition, the airline was suddenly not allowed to take him back to Thailand because of the pandemic. So, since March 20, Trofimov was stuck in the departures zone of the airport, sleeping on the ground and surviving on snacks at the airport or food donated to him by airport staff. He asked his embassy for help, but they reportedly could not get him a repatriation flight. Trofimov had also reportedly been traveling under a “grey passport,” meaning he is not an Estonian citizen, but lives in the country. The situation came to a close on July 7 – after 110 days spent in the airport – when Trofimov shared in an updated Facebook post that he was able to fly back to Estonia’s capital Tallinn.
* “Estonia!? Take me back to the airport!!” he begged.
* While he was stuck, did he get a crush on Catherine Zeta Jones?
* Maybe Tom Hanks could send him a typewriter or something for his troubles.
* The airport background music should stop playing in his head by next summer.
