KOREA DISCOVERS FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Beginning Wednesday, everybody in South Korea will become younger. Currently, and for a long, long time, every Korean was deemed to be a year old at the time of birth. A year’s age is added every January 1. So, if you are born on June 27, you are already a year old. In six months, on January 1, you are two years old. Another example: If you are born on December 31st, then at one minute midnight on January 1st you are suddenly two years old. But the custom has become increasingly unpopular and, starting Wednesday, everybody will revert to starting at zero on the day they were born, losing a year or two in the process.
* No way this can possibly cause confusion.
* Wait a minute – so how old exactly are these Korean boy bands?
* Korean Hallmark stores would sell 51 million birthday cards the last week in December, and zero the rest of the year.
* Suddenly, there are 12 million more people demanding the kid’s price at the Korean Golden Corral Buffet.
* Great, suddenly I’m two years younger. What can you do to make me 15 pounds lighter?
