IKEA: LET US NAME YOUR BABY
Ikea in Norway has built “a name bank” with more than 800 names listed on its website. The names are drawn from ones Ikea has given to its furniture. Ikea names its products after Swedish towns, lakes and other geographical features, but also uses names that have traditionally gone to people. Ikea says that, after all these years, they’ve built up a large ‘catalog’ to pick from.
Some examples: Malm, Kivik, Trotten, Tarva, Norna, and Mydal. Then there’s always Bjorksnas, Viktigt, Fniss and Ypperlig.
* Just like IKEA furniture, if you give your kid one of these names, they’re going to grow up with a screw loose.
* Meh. I can come up with IKEA names just randomly typing letters:
– Gyursvur
– Smeldjark
– Fultenbyord
– Mumsk
– Drunnvelder
… I could do this all day.
* I wanted to name our daughter Ypperlig, but my wife’s sister already grabbed the name, for her cat.
* You want a good IKEA name for your baby? How about Flatpack?
* If I’m going to name my kid after furniture, it’s going to be a good old American name. Futon.
* My daughter is named Sofa. Well, we spell it “Sophia,” but I call her Sofa.
