HURRICANE MATTHEW UNCOVERS CANNONBALLS ON THE BEACH
Cannonballs from the Civil War were found on a beach in South Carolina after Hurricane Matthew passed over the state. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Air Force Explosive Team confirmed the finding of “old Civil War Ordnance” at Folly Beach in South Carolina. Former Folly Beach mayor Richard Beck found the cannonballs – there were 15, stuck together by rust – during a walk on the beach investigating the storm’s effects. Some of the cannonballs were detonated and others were taken to a nearby Naval Base.
* Sorry, eBay.
* One weird moment: When the former mayor called the sheriff and said “Come and take a look at these old balls.”
* How come none of those guys with the metal detectors ever found these?
* Maybe because they didn’t have an 11-foot storm surge digging them out.
* Ahh, the Civil War – a country divided with both sides openly hating each other. Thank goodness it’s not like that now.
* If they’re just going to leave their cannonballs lying around the beach, no wonder the South lost.
* Of course, things are more modern these days. Now when we leave ordinance lying around Iraq, it’s got depleted uranium in it.
