HUMANS REMEMBER WHERE THE JUNK FOOD IS
Researchers from the Netherlands tested the spatial memory of 512 participants. Each subject was asked to follow a fixed route around a room stocked with real food or food-odor samples – things like apples, potato chips, cucumbers or chocolate brownies. As they walked around, the people were allowed to eat or smell the items. Later, the team asked each person to draw a map of where the samples had been. People were around 27 per cent better at remembering where the junk food was located than the healthy food.
* What a stupid experiment. It’s not like there’s ever going to be any junk food left to find later.
* How many times have you thought, “Now where did I leave that cucumber? In the pantry? In the junk drawer? Oh, that’s right, IN THE REFRIGERATOR! DUHHH!!!”
* One Netherlands snack that’s always easy to track down: Marinated herring. P.U.!
* How about an experiment that will help me remember where I put my glasses?
* What I’m hearing is, I have to find a new hiding place for my candy here at work.
