HOUSE RULES
Reddit asked, “What’s a ‘house rule’ you thought was annoying or hated as a child, but you swear by now as an adult?” Some of the responses:
– “My parents always said ‘don’t call before 9 or after 9’ and I think that’s a solid rule.”
– “As a kid I HATED my parents for refusing to let me get a cell phone until I was like 13 or 14, but looking back that was 100% the right call.”
– “Fill the ice tray immediately after emptying it.”
– “Laundry needs to be in the hamper or in the laundry room if you want it done.”
– “Don’t use the ‘sewing scissors’ for cutting anything except fabric. I am so sorry mom. I get it now.”
– “No hollering to me from another room. If you want to speak to me, come and talk at a normal volume.”
– “Silverware doesn’t leave dining areas.”
– “Dessert night is twice a week, Wednesdays and Sundays, and no more (unless it’s a birthday or our anniversary or something). I had that rule as a kid and I thought it was stupid, but my husband and I have been following it again for a couple of years and it just works.”
– “You do not walk into someone’s bedroom without their express permission.”
– “Don’t bother mom. Don’t talk to mom. Don’t ask anything from mom. Don’t need anything from mom. All of these are working much better for me as an adult than they did as a child.”
– “Make sure the house is spotless before a trip! Nothing is worse than coming home to a dirty house!”
