HIGH SCHOOL KIDS STOP BUS AFTER DRIVER HAS MEDICAL EMERGENCY
Two New Jersey high school students are heroes after they stopped their school bus when the driver became unresponsive. When the bus driver on Wednesday missed a turn to Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School, the students on the bus yelled to him, but he did not respond. Gavin Costello, 15, and Angelo Medina, 18, approached him and saw that he seemed to be having a medical emergency – he did not react to their directions and was looking all around. As the bus slowed down near a red light on a highway, the pair quickly put it in park, took away the driver’s keys, directed their classmates to exit the vehicle and called 911. The bus driver was taken to a hospital in stable condition, and none of the students were injured.
* Since the kids were from New Jersey, they not only took away the keys, but also pulled the radio and stripped off the hubcaps.
* I’m having a hard time picturing a busload of kids who aren’t all looking at their phones.
* Did they open that emergency door in the back that nobody ever gets to use?
* Gee, usually it’s the teenagers who are vacant and unresponsive.
* This is great. We never hear about the good medical emergencies that happen.
* Somebody’s going to be getting a little extra credit on their report cards this term.
* Of course, let’s be realistic. The kids weren’t just being nice. They had a vested interest in stopping the bus themselves.
* It’s like when passengers jump in to help the flight crew deal with an unruly passenger. Yes, they’re being helpful but they’re on that plane too.
* Still, when all’s said and done, it’s a nice story leaving us refreshed and ready for the next wacky news nightmare.
