FOOTBRIDGE COLLAPSES DURING DEDICATION

The mayor of the Mexican city of Cuernavaca was proudly inaugurating a new footbridge over a stream Tuesday when the span collapsed, sending him and about two dozen other people plunging about 10 feet onto rocks and boulders in the gully below. Seven people were injured, none critically. The new bridge is part of a new river walk, intended to be part of a revival of the city’s natural attractions. Mayor José Luis Urióstegui later said that some of the people accompanying him on the inaugural walk had been jumping on the bridge, perhaps in an attempt to make it sway. “There were a lot of people jumping. That was reckless,” Mayor Urióstegui said.
* Or maybe they were jumping for their lives. Just a thought.
* It didn’t help that Indiana Jones was on the far end of the bridge with a machete.
* Actually, they were lucky. This kind of thing usually happens the day after the warranty runs out.
* Now they can advertise that the river walk is a great place to see the falls.
* This would make a good commercial for Weight Watchers.
* Oh, well. Back to swinging across like Tarzan.
