FOOD LABELS THAT TELL YOU HOW MUCH EXERCISE YOU NEED
U.K. researchers at Loughborough University have developed a new food labeling system that would show how much exercise would be needed to burn off the food’s calories. It is hoped the information could help battle obesity. The proposed food labeling system, called Physical Activity Calorie Equivalent, would “show how many minutes or miles of physical activity are needed to burn off the calories in a particular food or drink.” For example, to burn off the 230 calories in a small bar of chocolate, you’d have to walk for 46 minutes or run for 23 minutes, according to the label. The researchers claim the program could potentially save a person up to 200 calories per day.
* 200 calories a day. Wow! That’s about a third of a Starbucks latte.
* The labels also remind you to fix your hair, and don’t slouch.
* Constant reminders about deadly high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes don’t get us to exercise. But this label should turn things around.
* Yeah? I got a label that says how far you can cram this package. And how many calories you’ll burn trying to remove it.
