FLORIDA IS THE SHARK ATTACK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Florida continues to be the shark bite capital of the world, according to a new report from Florida’s Museum of Natural History and Florida University. The International Shark Attack File identified Volusia County – which includes Daytona Beach – as the world’s hotspot for shark bites with 351 unprovoked attacks identified since the earliest records they could find, which date back to 1837. Florida overall has seen 928 attacks in that time frame, followed by Hawaii/195; California/138; South Carolina/ 118; North Carolina/80; Texas/45; Oregon/29; New Jersey/16, New York/24.
– In the world, the US with 351 bites in 200 years is followed by Australia with 706 then South Africa with 262 attacks.
– Just last year, in 2023, the Shark Attack File documented 69 unprovoked shark bites on humans worldwide. Of those attacks, 36 of them happened in US waters.
– Most shark attacks on humans are a case of imstaken identity, as sharks really don’t find us appetizing. If you are attacked by a shark, experts urge you to defend yourself as playing dead won’t work.
* Sharks are on to your shenanigans.
* If you are attacked by a shark, just chuckle and explain that this is a case of mistaken identity.
* If you don’t like sharks, stay away from the Florida beaches. Stay inland, where the alligators are.
* How is The Shark Attack File not the name of a bad TV show on the History Channel?
