DAREDEVIL FLIES IN AND OUT OF VOLCANO IN WINGSUIT
Sebastián Álvarez, a former Chilean Air Force pilot and wingsuit daredevil, recently became the first person to fly in and out of an active volcano. The 36-year-old accomplished the death-defying feat late last month at Villarrica, a volcano in Chile. Álvarez jumped out of a helicopter at an altitude of almost 2.2 miles and reached speeds of about 180 mph as he flew into and out of the 656-foot-wide crater of the dangerous volcano. Álvarez called it the most extreme project he’s ever done. It took him more than a year to prepare for the stunt, which required 500 practice jumps to perfect the technique of “flaring” to achieve the proper vertical and horizontal speeds to make it in and out of the volcano cone. “The preparation for this was all my life, pretty much, it’s been all my life,” he said.
* So… he did that, and, good for him, and, uh, good for him and his lifetime of preparation. We got any Kardashian news or anything lying around?
* Tom Cruise is thinking, “Dammit, that was my big stunt for the next Mission: Impossible movie!”
* Was there any money involved, or did he just, like, pass a hat around after?
* Flying into a volcano in a wingsuit. Check off another thing that nobody else has to do now.
* That’ll be tough to beat. How about flying through the spinning blades of a wind turbine?
