CITY WON'T LET COUPLE GET MARRIED IN A CEMETERY
The city of Lawrence, Kansas, won’t let a couple get married in a cemetery. Abbie Stutzer thought Oak Hill Cemetery would provide a “nice, memorable” venue for a Halloween evening wedding this fall. “My fiance and I just really dig them,” Stutzer said of cemeteries. “They are beautiful, in general, and in the fall, Oak Hill is gorgeous. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.” The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department denied the request. Mark Hecker, assistant director of Parks and Recreation, said the cemetery wedding just wasn’t a good idea. “If there’s a funeral that day, it creates a whole other thing … it’s one of those not-a-good-idea things,” he said. Stutzer was willing to cut the wedding party from about 80 to around 30 and said there would be no music or decorations, but the city still said no.
* Fine – but you’re passing up a whole new revenue stream.
* The official said, “It’s one of those not-a-good-idea things”? Wow, that’s a classic line.
* This assistant director Mark Hecker is my new favorite public employee.
* I love how the line just doesn’t leave any wiggle room for debate.
* You might even say the idea was dead.
* It’s Halloween. Sneak in at midnight.
* Wait – how about getting married in a morgue?
* It really makes me afraid to ask where they want to spend their honeymoon.
