BEACH TRASH COLLECTOR FINDS AMBERGRIS WORTH $100,000

A Thailand man walking the beach searching for trash found an odd-looking item. Somsak Boonrith stumbled upon a large, yellow, wax-like blob on Tarutao Island in Thailand. Any guesses? That’s right – ambergris, which is basically vomit from sperm whales. Ambergris is used in perfumes. When first regurgitated from the whale, it floats to the surface of the ocean giving off a foul smell. Once it’s all dried out, the smell becomes sweet giving it a long-lasting effect that makes it a common ingredient in fragrances. Mr. Boonrith used to be a fisherman but a storm destroyed his boat, so he had taken to walking the beach looking through trash trying to find valuable things. The nearly five-pound glob is worth roughly $102,768.
