THE SWEARINGEST CITIES

Preply, a firm that provides online language training, polled 1,500 people from 30 major U.S. locations to determine who swears the most and the least (full report here: https://preply.com/en/blog/cities-that-swear-most/):
– At what age do people use their first swear word? For most Americans, it was around age 11. (* Or age 2, if daddy’s driving.)
– Americans curse an average of 21 times a day. (* Only 21? Who’d they poll, the Amish?)
– The swearingest city is Columbus, Ohio, where people swear an average of 36 times per day. Las Vegas, Nevada and Jacksonville, Florida round out the top three.
– Phoenix, Arizona is tied with Portland, Oregon for the fewest cuss words per day at 14. Boston, Massachusetts, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin tied for second-fewest, at 15.
* Bogus survey. Have you never seen a movie set in Boston? “The Departed”? “The Town”? There’s more curses than a caravan of angry gypsy women.
* I’ve got two words for this survey, but I can’t say them on the air.
* There’s less cursing in Phoenix because it’s so hot, it takes too much energy to add that extra expletive.
* Only 1500 people polled. They called lots more, but those people cursed at the interviewer and hung up.
