AUDIO: NUTRITIONISTS SAY SCREW HEALTHY HALLOWEEN CANDY, GO FOR THE REAL STUFF
Should you be offering lower calorie, “healthy” Halloween candy? Huffington Post spoke with nutritionists about it. Well, at least they spoke with a couple who agreed that, no, let kids go nuts with the good ol’ good candy.
– Registered nutritionist Amanda Frankeny says, “Sugar-free or buzzwords like ‘keto,’ ‘low-carb’ or ‘superfood’ don’t necessarily make sweets healthier. While these labels sound nutritious at face value, too much candy of any type can lead to cavities and poor nutrition.” She says that the benefits of a healthy relationship with sweets may “far outweigh the nutritional components in each candy serving.”
– Frankeny adds, “You may see some candies that bring 30% of your daily vitamin C needs. But honestly, they’re still just sugar-covered calories making the tiniest nutritional contribution to what you need throughout the day.”
– Nutritionist Tracy Lockwood Beckerman says, ”You don’t want to deprive your little ones of the real deal, or else they may go scrounging around for it without your supervision and eat large quantities of that candy, potentially creating long term disordered eating issues.”
* Well, two nutritionists out of 64,670 in the U.S. can’t be wrong. (Yes, we looked it up!)
* You can read the full article in this month’s Highlights for Children magazine, in between The Timbertoes and Goofus and Gallant.
* This is fantastic news. Where’s the government funding for this? How did the Nobel Prize committee miss these two women?
* I kind of like this story. mainly ’cause those fancy candies cost three times as much.
