ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND OLDEST THEATER IN LONDON

A team of archaeologists believe they have discovered the oldest theater in London beneath a construction site in Whitechapel. Known as the Red Lion, it’s believed to date from around 1567. The Red Lion marked a shift from performances in inn yards, to shows in dedicated performance spaces. The team discovered a rectangular timber structure matching the dimensions of the stage in documents from 1569. In 1576, using the Red Lion as a prototype, the owner of that theater built The Theatre in Shoreditch, where a young William Shakespeare’s plays were performed in the 1590s.
* Opening act: The Rolling Stones.
* They even found some old theater tickets, but they couldn’t tell if the seats were Row 2B or not 2B.
* They know it was a theater because the floor was sticky from 500 years of spilled ale.
* They know it was the world’s oldest theater because they found a sign from the 1570’s that says “Ye Old Rocky Horror Picture Show, Midnight Showing Fridays and Saturdays”.
