13-YEAR-OLD GIRL ALLOWED TO DRILL HOLE IN PATIENT’S HEAD DURING SURGERY

In Austria, the 13-year-old daughter of a brain surgeon was allowed to drill a hole in a patient’s skull. The patient, a 33-year-old man, had arrived at Graz University Hospital with serious head injuries. The neurosurgeon, who has not been named, and depending on the news source has been identified as either a man or a woman – allegedly let his – or her – 13-year-old daughter take part in operating by drilling a hole in the patient’s skull. The surgery happened in January. It wasn’t until April that a complaint was logged to the public prosecutor’s office about the allegations. It then took until July for the patient to learn that it had happened. The surgeon and one other specialist who was present during the operation are said to have been let go by the hospital.
