The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Today is Letter Writing Day. Take a few minutes, and send someone a hand written letter. Letter writing is an almost lost skill. Most letters and notes nowadays are on emails and instant messages. Or, they are typed on an internet keyboard. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone, either printed or in cursive? … I thought so.”

NATIONAL COTTON CANDY DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“National Cotton Candy Day is today. Cotton Candy is a popular summertime treat. The Cotton Candy machine was patented in 1899 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton. They brought it to the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, where is was quite popular. Cotton Candy is a favorite at amusement parks, circuses, fairs, and sports venues. Cotton Candy was originally called fairy floss. It is made from Floss (or Flossine) sugar. We suggest you create a carnival atmosphere today, as you celebrate National Cotton Candy Day!”

SLEEP WITH THE HOBBITS

“The One-and-Only Hobbiton,” the little Hobbit village of Bag End built in 1999 for the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” movies in Matamata, New Zealand, was turned into a tourist site after the movies came out. Now, the owner of Hobbiton is opening up the place as a limited-time Airbnb. It will be open for exactly three two-night stays for a maximum of four guests at a time. The available dates: March 2-4, March 9-11, and March 16-18, 2023. The cost is only about $6 per night, but you have to pay for your own journey to get there. The site was built with a mile of road leading into a little Hobbit village, with the facades of 37 hobbit holes and associated gardens built into small hills, plus a mill, and a double arch stone bridge, and a 26-ton artificial oak tree. A few of the dwellings are furnished, which is where you would be sleeping. If you want to try and book a weekend, the reservation system opens at 4 p.m. EST on December 13.
* Oh – and it helps to be only four feet tall, or else there’s a lot of stooping.
* Conveniently located just 7,800 miles from the United States!
* It’s Lord of the Wring Every Dollar From the Fans.
* Hurry up, before Disney buys this, too, and the price goes up to $800.

AUDIO: NEW APP HEALS YOU WITH MUSIC

A new app is claiming to act as a therapist by creating customized playlists to help listeners deal with their emotions through music. The Emotion Equalization App asks users to fill out three questionnaires to measure emotional status and provide the information needed to create a playlist. The app surveys your mood and energy to create a corresponding therapeutic playlist of songs to change your emotional state or distract you from negative thoughts and pain.
* And then it plays you 24 hours of Bon Iver music. (pronounce ‘Bone EE-vair’, if you’ve never heard of him. See clip below.)
* I tried it. It kept giving me polka music.
* Change your emotional state or distract yourself from negative thoughts and pain? But that’s why we have beer and football.
* And after you’re feeling all better, the app will try to sell you all the songs you just heard.
CLIP: A little bit of Bon Iver’s all-time “At-least-I-don’t-have-it-as-bad-as-this-guy” song, Skinny Love.

U.S. NEWS

SHOPLIFTER LEAVES SNEAKERS BEHIND AFTER THEFT

In Sandy, Oregon, police are searching for a thief who left his shoes at the scene of a crime. The guy went into a convenience store, stole some beer, and ran, leaving behind a pair of light pink and red Nike Air Force 1s. Yes, just like Cinderella. While the police aren’t yet sharing the name of the store, or even when the theft happened, they have posted a picture of the shoes and are asking the public to help identify the owner.
* If the shoe fits, book ’em.
* The shoplifter thought even sneakers weren’t quiet enough?
* Hell, the shoes have to be worth ten times the amount of the beer he stole. Those things go for $140.
* Once again, a good police dog should be able to follow the trail of sweaty socks and lead them right to the culprit.
* Police aren’t sharing the name of the store or even when the crime happened? Are these the same cops working the case of those college kids in Idaho?

DOGGIE DAY CARE CAMPER PULLS FIRE ALARM

Firefighters in Grimes, Iowa were called to an alarm at a doggie day camp but arrived to find the fire alarm had accidentally been pulled by one of the canine campers. Dogwoods Lodge said a yellow lab named Birdie had trouble containing her excitement when she arrived for day camp on Friday and bounced into the fire alarm, setting it off. Dogwoods Lodge owner Jessica Tapper said Birdie didn’t actually seem all that contrite about pulling the alarm.
* She probably did it on a dare from the other dogs. A doggie dare. A double-dog dare!
* Maybe she was hoping to see the proper use of a fire hydrant.
* Do the dogs do a lot of grilling or setting off fireworks that they had to put in a fire alarm?
* What’s more odd, though, is later on, Birdie short-sheeted some of the other doggie beds.

THE MOST AFFORDABLE FOOTBALL STADIUM TO PROPOSE AT

Have you decided to propose to your girlfriend at a football game? Good for you, she’ll always remember that. Always. And she’ll never let you forget it. Anyway, proposing at a stadium can be kind of expensive. A website called Betway.com ranked NFL stadiums on parking, food, accommodation and game ticket costs to uncover which are the most affordable for proposals, you cheapskate.
1. The best stadium to propose at is the Jacksonville Jaguars’s TIAA Bank Field. Cheap-seat tickets are $81 each, parking is $22, romantic dinner is $69.75, and it’s free to write your message on the jumbotron.
2. The second-best choice is Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. $91 game tickets, $18 parking, $70 dinner for two, and $150 to get your proposal on the scoreboard.
3. Cleveland Browns FirstEnergy Stadium is in third place. $100 a ticket, $22 parking, $85.50 for a romantic meal, and only $100 to feature your message in the jumbotron.
4. State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals, is in fourth place. $84 a ticket, $12 parking, $93 dinner for two, $100 to get your proposal on the board.
5. Taking the fifth spot is the U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. $108 per ticket, $16 parking, $80 dinner for two, and $200 to get your proposal on the jumbotron.
Other stadiums that are in the same ballpark (* Ha!) are Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium; Indianapolis Colts Lucas Oil Stadium; Atlanta Falcons Mercedes-Benz Stadium; Pittsburgh Steelers Acrisure Stadium; and Denver Broncos Mile High Stadium.
* Of course, if you want a couple of stadium beers to celebrate, add another $80.
* You propose, she says, “No!” You say, “No?” She says, “No, that was NOT pass interference just then!!! What did you ask?”
* Remember guys – if she says yes, it could be because she just needs a ride home from the game.
* Oh, well. There’s always the bowling alley.
* Or the two of you drop in on gameday at your friend’s with the biggest flatscreen.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

INDONESIA OUTLAWS SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE

Indonesia, the world’s third-largest “democracy,” with the world’s largest Muslim population, has just overhauled its criminal code. One of these new no-no’s is having sex outside of marriage. It’s not allowed. The new rule also applies to foreigners in the country. If you’re not married, prepare to be chaste, in both senses of the word, because if they catch you having sex they’ll chase you from here to Kingdom Come.
* What’s ironic is, if they catch you having unmarried sex, they’ll really screw you over.
* Indonesia also unvelied a new slogan, “Indonesia – The Frustration Nation.”
* In Indonesia, when you have “friends with benefits,” the benefit is they’ll sometimes give you a ride to work.
* Jakarta? Naw, I never even touched ‘er!
* So there’s no sex before marriage, but then you get married, and, well, that’s the end of sex, too. This must be some sort of overpopulation control thing.
* They’re gonna have to change the name of Bali to Blue Bali.

CAROLINE’S COMEDY CLUB IN NYC CLOSING

The famous Caroline’s comedy club on Broadway in New York City is closing its doors for good. Owner Caroline Hirsch told The Post, “I did not renew my lease. New Year’s Eve will be our last night.” She said that although business has rebounded strongly since the pandemic, the venue’s 10-year lease at 750 Seventh Avenue was due for a rent “reset” at the end of the year and “the landlord felt they can get a lot more for the space.” Hirsch launched the original Caroline’s as a cabaret in Soho in 1981. Hirsch relocated to Times Square in 1992. Virtually every comic you’ve ever heard of has worked there, including Richard Belzer, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, Jon Stewart, Joy Behar, Jimmy Fallon, Michael Che, Robin Williams, Bob Saget, Rosie O’Donnell and Conan O’Brien.

COVID-19 in History:

2002 – Iraq handed over its long-awaited arms declaration to the United Nations, denying it had weapons of mass destruction.
* They denied they had ’em, the inspectors didn’t see ’em … we invaded and never found ’em … Oops!

1972 – The last trip by humans to the Moon, Apollo 17, lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
* After you’ve driven an electric buggy up and down the hills of the Moon and hit a golf ball over the horizon, what else is there?

1945 – The microwave oven was invented.
* Now people could actually be impatient for a meal that takes longer than 5 minutes to cook.

1941 – The Japanese attacked the American naval fleet at Pearl Harbor, triggering the U.S.’s entry into World War Two.
* Duh! They would have made out so much better if they had just slowly and quietly started selling us cars.

1787 – Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.
* They would have signed it sooner, but they had to get their attorneys to look at it.

THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY

2014 – Pink Floyd’s classic album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, made a surprise return to the Billboard chart when it landed at No.13, thanks to ultra-cheap pricing in the Google Play store where the album was discounted to 99 cents. Although it held the No.1 spot in the US for only a week when released in 1973, it remained in the Billboard album chart for 741 weeks (over 14 years).

2005 – The MBE medal that John Lennon returned to the Queen was found in a royal vault at St. James’ Palace. Lennon returned his medal in November, 1969 with a letter accompanying saying, “Your Majesty, I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With Love, John Lennon.” Historians were calling for the medal to be put on public display.

2003 – Britney Spears was at No.1 on the U.S. album chart with “In The Zone,” the singer’s fourth U.S. No.1 album.

1974 – Carl Douglas started a two-week run at No.1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Kung Fu Fighting.” The song was recorded in 10 minutes, started out as a B-side, and sold 10 million.

1967 – Otis Redding went into the studio to record “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.” The song went on to be his biggest hit. Redding didn’t see its release; he was killed 3 days later in a plane crash.

1964 – Beach Boy Brian Wilson married Marilyn Rovell in L.A. The couple divorced in 1979.

1962 – Bill Wyman auditioned for the Rolling Stones. At the age of 25, he was considerably older than the other members.
