WAITRESS MISTAKENLY BRINGS CUSTOMER $5700 BOTTLE OF WINE
A waitress at the upscale British steakhouse Hawskmoor in Manchester accidentally served a customer a £4,500 (about $5,700 US) bottle of red wine. The customer had asked for the 2001 Chateau Pichon Longueville Contesse de Lalande – a £260 (about $330 US) bottle of red – but the waitress accidentally grabbed a “rare” 2001 Chateau le Pin Pomerol. Only 400-600 cases of Chateau le Pin Pomerol were produced in 2001. When the patron finished it off and asked for a second bottle, the server discovered it was a one-of-a-kind at the restaurant. Hawksmoor owner Will Beckett says, “It’s just a one-off mistake. If she had done it twice I would’ve been furious, but she’s so great and I’m not annoyed.”
* Besides, he said, “We needed another dishwasher.”
* And they’ll make up the price difference on the next sucker.
* When the customer heard, he did a spit-take and sprayed a $15 mouthful of wine on the table.
* Time to switch the wine cellar to, like, the Dewey Decimal System.
* All the customer wanted was a nice chianti to go with his fava beans.
* Meh. Fill the empty bottle up with Carlo Rossi Sangria and a tablespoon of grape syrup for character and sell it again.
