VENICE TRACKS TOURISTS
The Italian city of Venice has launched a new system which tracks tourists as they wander the city. The three-million-dollar system was created to prevent over-tourism, a problem Venice struggles with. The system is located in an abandoned warehouse on the Venetian island of Tronchetto. It knows in real time how many people are in each part of the city and which countries they’re from by analyzing which country their mobile phone is registered to. It knows where you go, how fast you are moving through the city, and where the crowds are building. They hope to use the data to better plan for public transport and boats, and prevent over-tourism.
* Does the system call you up if you haven’t spent enough money?
* In the event of overcrowding it sends electric shocks through your phone until you return to your hotel.
* The system also tracks your behavior, and on December 1st it forwards it to Santa Claus.
* And you don’t think the NSA already has one of these up and running here in America?
