TV SPORTS ANCHOR SENTENCED FOR BANK ROBBERY
A former Winnipeg television sports anchor has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison after pleading guilty to a string of bank robberies in Saskatchewan. Stephen Vogelsang was sentenced last Thursday after entering guilty pleas to four robbery-related charges. Vogelsang admitted to holdups in Regina and Saskatoon between July and October 2017. He will appear in a Medicine Hat, Alberta, courtroom this coming Friday on charges related to a pair of bank robberies in that city during the same period. Mr. Vogelsang spent a decade at CTV Winnipeg as a sports anchor and as news director, but left to teach journalism at Winnipeg’s Red River College. After nine years there, he moved with his wife to British Columbia for her work. But he couldn’t find a job, so they eventually returned to Winnipeg. He found a job, but it didn’t work out. By then, his marriage was crumbling, he was suffering from mental health issues, and they ended up having to sell their properties at a loss. According to his lawyer, in the span of about three years, he went from being an executive to being homeless, broke and divorced with lots of debt.
* TV, huh? I would have guessed radio from the personal history.
* “Breaking news tonight at five… me!”
* One clue it was him – after he handed a bank teller his stick-up note, he’d break for six minutes of commercials.
* On the bright side, he still has great-looking TV hair.
* Medicine Hat. It’s like the Harry Potter Hogwart’s Sorting Hat, except it tells you what to take when your tummy hurts.
