(All days repeat annually on today’s date unless otherwise noted; days may or may not be called “National”/”International”/”World” depending on source; sources listed often have additional info. We generally do not list special days which were created by commercial companies for the purpose of marketing – including “holidays” created by the National Day Calendar and Wellcat websites to drive traffic to their websites – or the hundreds of disease awareness listings which occur each year. We present only those specially designated days we feel your listeners would find most interesting or significant.)
BATMAN DAY
Batman’s first ever appearance was in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939.
LOYALTY DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“Loyalty Day – an opportunity to express and reaffirm our loyalty to our country – was first celebrated in the 1920’s. Communism was on the rise, and feared in America. At the time, May Day (May 1st) was perceived by some as a Communist holiday. In a sense, Loyalty Day was intended to counter this. The U.S. Congress made this an official holiday on July 18, 1958 with the signing of Public Law 85-529. Then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, proclaimed May 1, 1959 the first official observance of Loyalty Day.
MAY DAY
The Holiday Insights website says this:
“May Day, the first of May, is celebrated around the world. It has a number of meanings. In many other countries it is a celebration of spring and the coming of summer. It is celebrated with many spring flowers, many of them blooming right in your own backyard. To communist and socialist countries, it is a celebration for the workers. In many countries it is celebrated as part of a one- to three-day holiday. Of particular note, it is not a national holiday in the United States, except in Hawaii where it is known as “Lei Day.”
MOTHER GOOSE DAY
The National Today website says this:
“Gloria. T. Delamar, a prominent fairy-tale writer, founded Mother Goose Day in 1987, the year she published “Mother Goose: From Nursery to Literature.” But the history of fairy-tales and subsequent nursery rhymes goes quite further back in history. The French writer from the 17th century, Charles Perrault, is believed to have been the founder of the fairy-tale genre. It was through his works that fantasy and life lessons were incorporated for the first time. In 1729, an English version of Perrault’s work, translated by Robert Samber, was published and it was called “Histories, or, Tales of Past Times, Told by Mother Goose.”

AUDIO: JACK BLACK MAKES BILLBOARD HOT 100 HISTORY
Jack Black broke a Billboard Hot 100 record this week when his song from “A Minecraft Movie,” called “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” reached No. 78 on the popular singles chart. The tune, which clocks in at just 34 seconds, is officially the shortest song to make the Billboard Hot 100 list in the chart’s 67-year history.
* This is different than those Korean boy band songs that you turn off in under 20 seconds when they come on.
* By the time you move your first leg to dance to it, it’s over.
* I’m just glad Jason Momoa didn’t sing.
* 35 seconds long, and you know it’s going to get a 14 minute dance remix.

NEW BARBRA STREISAND ALBUM
Barbra Streisand has an album of duets coming next month. It’s called “The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume Two” (* How did I miss Volume 1?), and it is believed that this will be Streisand’s last album, as she is a perfectionist about her voice, and at 83-years-old she is really “getting up there,” as they say. Here is the list of songs and duet partners.
1. “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with Hozier
2. “My Valentine” with Paul McCartney
3. “To Lose You Again” with Sam Smith
4. “The Very Thought of You” with Bob Dylan
5. “Letter to my 13-year-old Self” with Laufey
6. “One Heart, One Voice” with Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande
7. “I Love Us” with Tim McGraw
8. “Secret O’ Life” with James Taylor
9. “Fragile” with Sting
10. “Where Do I Go From You?” with Josh Groban
11. “Love Will Survive” with Seal
* This is literally an oldies album any way you look at it.
* At this age, singing duets is smart. You only have to remember half as many lyrics.
* Are there liner notes so we can tell which voice is Barbra’s and which is Bob Dylan’s?
* She knows AI could reproduce her voice from 50 years ago, right?
* Her last album at 83? Judy Collins turns 86 today, and she’s TOURING. (See the Birthdays in today’s Almanac.)

U.S. NEWS
DAD CAUGHT WITH COCAINE AT DISNEY WORLD
A man has been banned from Walt Disney World after he was caught sneaking a wallet full of cocaine into the Magic Kingdom. It happened back on March 29. 44-year-old Dustin Wallace and his son were at the security checkpoint outside the park. As he was being wanded with a metal detector, the officer asked Mr. Wallace to remove the wallet from his back pocket. The officer noticed that the wallet was bulky, and Wallace began to get nervous. The officer asked to check the wallet. Wallace opened it and the officer saw a bag of white powder. A field test on the powder indicated the presence of cocaine. During his arrest, Wallace admitted the cocaine was for stress relief.
* Because cocaine is the great relaxer.
* Everyone knows Disney parks are famous for their lines.
* Looks like Dustin Wallace was pixie dustin’ at Disney.
* “Nice job, Dad. I TOLD you to hide it in your sock!”
* Caught with drugs at the Magic Kingdom. I bet he was not Happy. He was probably real Grumpy that he’d been so Dopey.
8 MILLION DIMES SPILL ON HIGHWAY
A crash Tuesday morning north of Fort Worth, Texas, left millions of dimes scattered across Highway 287 for most of the day. The driver of an 18-wheeler hauling freshly minted dimes veered off the roadway, overcorrected, and overturned just after 5:30 a.m. The driver and a passenger were transported to a hospital for injuries not considered life threatening. (* Bet they didn’t want to hang around and pick them up.) Officials say there were 8 million dimes on the truck worth $800,000. Crews used vacuums and street sweepers to suck up the loose change.
* Texas Rangers have put the call out for every CoinStar machine in the state.
* Sure, we COULD make our coins magnetic for easy pickup, but no-o-o-o-o.
* No paper wrappers? Do they just shovel newly minted coins into the back of a semi now?
* Cleaning up the dimes cost … a pretty penny.
* I guess with that heavy a load, you can’t exactly … stop on a dime.
* Talk about bad timing – the annual Texas Metal Detectors convention was just last weekend.
* Anyway, that’s my two cents.
CHURCH FORCES SWINGERS CLUB NEXT DOOR TO SHUT DOWN
In Plymouth, Connecticut, a swingers club was forced to close its doors because it was located too close to the Baptist church next door. The club had been open since March 28. At a contentious town council meeting, a pastor for the Riverside Baptist Church and dozens of parishioners said that The Wicked Fun Club was being illegally operated and violated zoning laws. The club’s location was 30 feet from the church. The town has specific adult use regulations in place for adult businesses. Plymouth officials said that the club fits into the adult use category of business – adult entertainment cabarets – and one requirement is to be a minimum of 1,000 feet away from churches. Club owner Steve Gagne responded by saying, “We are not a nightclub. We are not dance club. We do not serve alcohol. We are not open to the public. We are not a cabaret or adult entertainment venue. We do not allow drugs, smoking, or vaping anywhere inside the club. We are not a brothel or commercial sex establishment.”
* Sounds more like the Boring Fun Club than the Wicked Fun Club.
* How do members meet and get to know each other? Do they sit at card tables and play bridge?
* Strange that it’s the sex club that has to move when it’s the church that has its organ on public display.
* Strange that the church objected when the swingers club goes by the policy of “Love Thy Neighbor.”

* I guess it all depends on what your definition of “over” is.

* And after 161 years, they still taste awful.
THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY
