THE END OF MUSIC AS WE KNOW IT?
A billionaire venture capitalist named Vinod Khosla believes that in the near future, we won’t be listening to our favorite bands or artists, we’ll be listening to custom made sounds that are tailored to our mood. Khosla believes that, 10 years from now, consumers will be listening to music that is designed specifically for them, their preferences, and their needs – non-specific music created by A.I. There’s some evidence that consumers are shifting away from specific artists or bands to listen to more mood-based playlists. Music services like Spotify can select playlists that are centered around activities or emotions rather than choosing specific songs. And there is already a German app called Endel, which takes data such as your location, the time, or the weather to create personalized “soundscapes” to help you focus or relax.
* That’s a bold statement coming from a man who sounds like he hasn’t listened to the radio in the past 50 years.
* Music designed specifically for my preferences and my needs? So, music made out of beer?
* Remember Pop? Disco? Metal? Punk? Hip Hop? Emo? Techno? Bro Country? Remember how Dad would yell, “It all sounds the same!” It’s supposed to.
* Whatever. As long as I can still get traffic and weather on the 8’s.
