QUICKEST FIX FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: PLANT A BIG BUNCH OF TREES

A new study says the most effective way to fight global warming is to plant lots of trees. A trillion of them. A study from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, published in the journal Science, calculated that over the decades, those new trees could suck up nearly 830 billion tons of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That’s about as much carbon pollution as humans have spewed in the past 25 years. There are about 3 trillion trees now on Earth. They said that even with existing cities and farmland, there’s enough space for new trees to cover 3.5 million square miles. Study co-author Thomas Crowther says, “This is by far – by thousands of times – the cheapest climate change solution and the most effective.”
* I’d imagine the scientists were all sittin’ around, and suddenly one of them slaps his forehead and says, “Trees! Duh!”
* These scientists can’t see the forest for the trees.
* Somebody call the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and see if they want to save the world.
* A trillion new trees. It sounds great, until you think of all the raking we’d have to do in the fall.
* Yes, but you have to water them, and we need that for our bottled water, so… sorry. Go think of something else.
